How many times have you heard the phrase “I am a Catholic, But I don’t agree with everything the Church teaches?”
Sadly; this is something that is a widespread crises; especially since 70% of those who identify as ️Catholic reject doctrine and dogma, even as far as rejecting the real presence. (John 6:66)
So what is the cause of the apostasy within the Roman Catholic Church, and how did we get here? In simple terms; this was initiated by the lack of prayer and spiritual dryness.
Since Saint Thomas Aquinas has mentioned that the way we pray is the way we believe (Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi), we can clearly come to the conclusion that many Catholics, including clergy, were deceived due to the lack of prayer, especially from watered down liturgies, which result in the lack of the Three Important Virtues; Faith, Hope, and Charity.
Since we need prayer in order to Know, Love, and Serve God (as stated in Baltimore Catechism Question 4) it is important to determine that the lack of prayer invites the devil into the lives of many since we do not have guard over our mind, tongue, and actions during temptation, which can contradict the Law of God which we are bound to obey if we want to die in sanctifying grace.
Since lack of prayer initiates lack of guard against mind, actions, and tongue, it explains why the lack of Solid catechesis has faded away among many Catholics causing them to not trust in God and His Church, which is the sin against the virtue of faith.
Baltimore Catechism 5 Asks:
“From whom do we learn to know, love, and serve God?”
Answer: We learn to know, love, and serve God from Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who teaches us through the Catholic Church.”
This is something very important to meditate and reflect upon. Scripture makes it very clear in 1 Timothy 3:15 that the Church is the “Pillar and foundation of truth.” This is why each mass we profess in the creed ” I believe in One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church” because truth comes from Her, the bride of Christ, which is the sacrament of salvation alone.
So what are we to do to those who identify as Catholic but reject the faith? We must first investigate why they reject the faith. Is this due to pride, by their own fault, or is this how they were educated by no fault of their own? If rejection of the faith is out of pride and lack of trust in God’s Church, even when corrected, we can clearly identify them as an apostate.
Matthew 18: 15 – 17 (Douay Rheims)
But if thy brother shall offend against thee, go, and rebuke him between thee and him alone. If he shall hear thee, thou shalt gain thy brother.
And if he will not hear thee, take with thee one or two more: that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may stand.
And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.”
The Baltimore Catechism asks in question 205 “How does a Catholic sin against faith” In return; it responds “A Catholic sins against faith by apostasy, heresy, indifferentism, and by taking part in non-Catholic worship”
So what is apostasy? The Baltimore Catechism index definition of Apostasy is simple and bold and identifies as ” Rejection of ones faith”
Heresy can fall into this same category since heresy follows as rejecting the Holy Catholic Faith as well as subscribing to false doctrine that the Church clearly condemns by the councils and the ex Cathredra statement of the Popes, which is an act of infallibility as identified as the council of vatican 1.
So in this great time of crises within Holy Mother Church; let us continue to pray for the salvation of souls. As simple as offering up 3 Hail Marys for the Church, from offering up a rosary, to having a priest say Mass for your intentions, let us ask Christ to give grace to those whom reject his teachings. Saint Joseph, Patron of the Church, Pray for us.
